History
Glades County is a county located in the U.S. state of Florida. As of 2000, the population was 10,576. The U.S. Census Bureau 2005 estimate for the county was 11,252. The county seat is Moore Haven, Florida.
Glades County was created on April 23, 1921. It was named for the Florida Everglades. Glades County is also home to one of Florida's longest continuously running festivals. Chaol Nitka Festival is a celebration of local history and culture and acts as a county fair. The festival also draws attention to the long and friendly relationship between Glades County settlers and the Seminole groups.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 986 square miles (2,555 km²), of which, 774 square miles (2,004 km²) of it is land and 213 square miles (551 km²) of it (21.57%) is water.
