History
Martin County is a county located in the U.S. state of Florida. As of 2000, the population was 126,731. The U.S. Census Bureau 2008 estimate for the county was 138,660. The county seat is Stuart, Florida.
Martin County was created in 1925 with the northern portion coming from St. Lucie County and southern portion coming from Palm Beach County. It was named for John W. Martin, Governor of Florida from 1925 to 1929.
The county has a total area of 753 square miles (1,950 km²), of which 556 square miles (1,440 km²) is land and 197 square miles (510 km²) is water, much of it in Atlantic Ocean and Lake Okeechobee. The total area is 26.19% water.
