History
Okaloosa County is a county located in the panhandle of the U.S. state of Florida. Located in northwest Florida, it extends from the Gulf of Mexico to the Alabama state line. As of 2000, the population was 170,498. The U.S. Census Bureau 2005 estimate for the county was 182,172. The county seat is Crestview, Florida.
Okaloosa County was created in 1915. Okaloosa is a Choctaw word meaning "black water". "Oka" means water, and "lusa" is black in the Choctaw language. Fort Walton Beach and three U.S. Air Force bases (Eglin AFB, Duke Field and Hurlburt Field) are located in the south.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,082 square miles (2,802 km²), of which, 936 square miles (2,423 km²) of it is land and 146 square miles (379 km²) of it (13.53%) is water.
